In reflecting on our 2 week adventure from Texas to Ohio and back, I have been thinking about how amazing the adventure was for us. I have also been analyzing the newbie mistakes we made and how to improve for the next adventure.
1. The biggest mistake I found we made was not have enough extentions for our tanks and cords. Our campsite in the Ouachita National Forest was set up in just a way that we had to go buy extensions for our tanks, electric and our TV cords in order for us to set up the camper. This mistake cost us around $200 to correct at the local Walmart. We added an extra 20 feet to our black tank making 35 feet, purchased 100 foot cable cord, and a 25 foot extension for our 30 amp electrical cord. Now we hopefully are all set for any situation.
2. We didn’t have any reservations or even ideas where we were going to stay while on the road. I took a new job and worked this trip into the conversion over to the job. I only had a 2 day notice to get ready for this trip. We planned this trip for the end of July so we knew what route we were taking but not where we would be staying. Luckily, this worked out, we were always able to find a place to park every night. We even found some amazing places to stay that we will never forget.
3. The first 2 days of our trip, we were heading toward a tropical storm. We missed out on a couple of things we wanted to do because we had to stop and wait for Tropical Storm Cristobal to pass through Arkansas before we could continue on. That worked out too for us, after the storm passed we saw very little rain at all. Always a good idea to keep a close eye on the weather when traveling with a travel trailer.
4. We did not realize the repairs we would be making to our new travel tailer as we moved down the road. It is a moving home and therefore screws worked their way out while we were moving. The screws on the lock on the door came out and we had to get new ones. The screws in the shower came out and had to be put back. The latch on the drawer under the dinette came apart and still needs to be repaired. These are all minimal repairs, but we didn’t plan for them.
5. We tried to pack way to many stops into 14 days. Their were so many things we wanted to do on this trip, that we had to remove some of our stops as we went in order to be able to enjoy other stops. This being our first trip we did not realize how long it would take to get from one place to the next. Next time we will account for the extra time that it takes to pull a travel trailer.
All this being said, we had an amazing time on our trip and learned a lot on the journey. Greatest part of it all was the freedom that we had to change our plans quickly.
