Renting versus buying an RV

There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to rent or buy your RV. Ask yourself these questions when making a decision.

1. How often do you feel like you are going to use your RV? Just once or a twice a year for short trips or long term such as several months at a time. If using the RV very little it might be cheaper to rent than buy an RV. If you are going to be full time or spend several months at a time in the RV then renting one first might be an option to help pick a floor plan.

2. How will you store the RV when not in use? Those who are thinking about buying an RV for part-time use need to keep in mind what you will do with the RV when you are not using. There are many places to store and RV, but those cost need to be considered in the price when purchasing.

3. Have you had previous experience with hauling and caring for an RV? If you are considering becoming an RV owner but have never had any experience with one, then renting one for a while will give you the opportunity to be sure it is really something you enjoy before making a big investment.

4. What comfort level do you want to get from your RV? Buying your own RV can increase your comfort level by allowing you to make it your own. Decorate and change things to your own preference and give you the peace of mind to know that no one else has been using your space.

5. How much would it cost to rent an RV? Renting an RV can be very affordable to very expensive depending on what type of RV you are looking for. From what I can see it can run from $100 a night to $5000 a night, as they come in basic models all the way up to complete luxury models.

6. What style of RV do you want to purchase? If you are just beginning your search for the perfect RV and have no idea what kind of RV that you want, then renting one or two different models for small trips could help you to decide. Doing this could save you a lot of money in the long run. Buying the wrong RV and then trading it in later to find what you need can lead to losing money invested in the RV.

7. Is having an RV really a safer way to travel? I am writing this article in the midst of a nation wide pandemic. I do believe that traveling in an RV is safer than any other form of traveling during this pandemic. When we went on our 2 week trip to see my kids across country, we had our own bathroom, bed and every we needed to survive without coming in contact with another person if we didn’t want to. You just need to decide if you are up for the challenge of taking care of RV and the expensive. These expenses include maintenance, higher fuel cost, and where you will park it along the way.

8. How do you go about renting an RV? There are lots of companies that rent our RV’s and some of them are really expensive. From most of my research it looks like the best way to rent one is through “Outdoorsy”. This site is like the Airbnb of RV’s. RV owners list their RVs for others to rent. This would mean you can pick what works best for you.

I hope this article has helped you to decide whether you should rent an RV before you buy an RV or even just rent and not buy. What ever your decision, just know that the freedom of traveling in an RV for my husband and I has been amazing.
